Tapetelana: curated Mexican artisanal crafts brought to Japan
Yumiko Murai is a resident of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, a far cry from her original home of Kanagawa Prefecture. However, she’s dedicated herself to the cross-cultural exchange of her two homes, both of which have storied histories and appreciation for artisanal crafts.
Residing in Mexico for half the year, Murai traverses the country, then later returns to her homeland of Japan to exhibit and sell the goods she has curated from local artisans. These include small handmade trinkets, ceramics, and rugs. Collections for different visits usually follow a certain theme, and from November 14th to November 19th, 2023, her selection of animal-themed goods will be on display at Hako Gallery in Yoyogi Uehara, Tokyo.
