Homme Plisse 10th Anniversary Exhibit at Issey Miyake Ginza | CUBE

Homme Plisse 10周年記録展示会

4 Chome-4-5 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0061 東京都中央区銀座4-4-5

2023 marks the ten-year anniversary of the inception of Homme Plisse, the popular sub-brand of design house Issey Miyake, whose legendary designer of the same name passed away last year in 2022 at the age of 84. Miyake’s most recognizable and iconic contribution to the fashion landscape is his pleated clothing, which utilizes a polyester fabric that is heat-treated, resulting in garments with distinctly shaped pleats that don’t wrinkle.

The Homme Plisse line is, as of recent years, the most popular line utilizing this signature technology, discernible with its deeply grooved and wide pleats and stand-out geometric silhouettes. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the line, the Issey Miyake 445 store in Ginza, Tokyo, and the Issey Miyake store in Semba, Osaka, are hosting special exhibits centering around the Homme Plisse design philosophy and manufacturing process.

Photographer Henry Leutwyler has captured images featuring the signature details of the line’s garments. Tailor’s tools, such as measuring tape, buttons, and pins, are put against stark-white backgrounds along with fabric swatches and garment tags. At the center of the Ginza 445 CUBE store is a central installation featuring pleated fabrics in varying colors placed upon pleated paper, which is an essential component of the garment-production process. A larger installation, similarly based upon the production process, can be seen from the outside window with an Issey Miyake text logo visible on top.

Special-run shirts, jackets, and trousers made specifically for the tenth anniversary celebration are on display throughout the exhibit floor, though purchasing these goods was limited to a now-finished raffle system.

The exhibit itself isn’t particularly large, existing only on the first floor of the 445 store; however, it is right down the street from the 442 Ginza flagship shop, making it a quick yet essential visit for fans of the brand who are already shopping in the Ginza area.

Both the Tokyo and Ginza exhibits are operating until December 26th, 2023. Admission is completely free and pictures and video are fully allowed.
